Appy Friday! 6/6/14

Happy summer! I have some good news and some bad news. The good news is that iOS developers seem to be putting their apps out there for free even when school is out. The bad news is my summer schedule is disjointed between summer school, taking my kids around town and traveling, so the app posts will be a little more sporadic than normal.

My Picks for Free App Friday:

Early Childhood:

My 1st steps preschool early learning - let's learn about colors by BelugaBloo (normally $0.99)

-Learn colors and objects that are that color and then "play" by matching the color to the object. It has cute graphics and has a child's voice narrating. The only drawback is there is no data tracking or customization (I wish I could add or select colors, add own photos or change field of answers).

Elementary:

Crazy Cursive Letters by madebyeducators (normally $2.99)
-This is a cursive tracing app that gives demonstration and then you can trace the dots with various different "pen" styles for common words and single letters with phonic sounds. Note that the default font is does not match the curriculum my students use (Zaner Bloser or Handwriting without Tears), so it is VERY IMPORTANT to select the alternative cursive style for the letters before you begin. I would also preview the words, some of them are incorrect (like 'I'). The demo is super fast, which would be great for students who are impatient or just need a quick review on how to form the letter. I would not use for students with slow visual processing or very new to cursive. If you mess up, it makes you start from the beginning instead of just sticking you where you were accurate last. This feature will frustrate some students, but good for students who mess up just to hear the negative feedback noise. It has an option to enter your own words (free writing), but just one at a time. It does not support capitals.

Middle-High:

Area of Figures by Brainingcamp LLC (normally $0.99)

-Works on using virtual manipulatives for Geometry, ages 9-14. It has lesson, manipulative, quiz and challenge activities for learning the area of figures for rectangles, parallelograms, triangles and circles. I think that this is more for upper elementary and middle schoolers who need a review of how to find the area of shapes. It's self-paces and interactive and has audio for students who struggle with reading or learn with audio paired with visuals.

All grade levels:

iOT Session by Covington Enterprises Unlimited (normally $2.99)

-This app works on the following Occupational Therapy skills visual tracking, bilateral coordination, visual processing, fine motor, visual scanning and handwriting. Created by an OT and is designed for K-12. It's not super fancy and uses some weird looking clip art. There are some activities that I normally do with manipulatives that compliment nicely on this app. I really like that it keeps data for you and you can email the reports!
