Hi readers!

It’s crazy how fast the spring is going! It seems weird to already start planning for the summer and next school year!

Just a few free apps today. Good news though! I finally got a few moments to do some reviews. Hope you enjoy them!

EARLY CHILDHOOD

Puzzle for Kids - Animal by zhu jacky

Normally $0.99

Simple puzzle app where students can tap and slide puzzle pieces together. What I like about it is if you put it in the right spot, it zooms in and snaps in place. But if you put it in the wrong place, it just sits there, it doesn’t bounce it back, so the student has to notice they need to move the piece for it to snap in. What I didn’t like was the pop up ads.

Mental Math Speed Challenge by Kurtis Pritchard

Normally $0.99

This app just does basic math flash cards for addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Problems are either all one category or mixed but you can select difficulty level and numbers of questions. When you finish the challenge, you receive your percent accuracy and time. There is a leader board so you can work on besting your own top score. Obviously if a timed activity puts your student in a meltdown, you should pick a different app. What I like about the app is it’s simple. There is not much to it. What I wish is that you could pick math problem sets instead of vague difficulty levels.

ALWAYS FREE, ALWAYS AWESOME

Pizza Fractions 1 by Brian West, Free

This app has been around awhile, so I was surprised I hadn’t reviewed it yet. It is a concrete way to learn about fractions with almost everyone’s favorite food..pizza. The app is the beginning level and works on identifying fractions with denominators 1-12. There are additional levels (2 and 3), which are also free. In options you can pick difficulty level (easy, medium, hard) or select the method for moving to the new problem. You can shake to get the next fraction problem or use a button. What I don’t like that there isn’t a way to turn off the sound effects, you would have to silence the whole iPad.
