Appy Spring!
I don’t know about you, but I am constantly running out of space on my iPad. Especially with all the Appy Friday downloading I do. Don’t forget that trick that right after you tap “GET” the app download looks like a circle. You can tap that circle before it’s done downloading and it will transform into the cloud shape for easy downloading later (when you have more space). Just go to the purchased tab in your App store to get your app at another time.

Shape Gurus - teach shapes for preschooler by Colto

This app works on shape based puzzles and other pre-school activities (matching, colors, sizes). The activities are errorless or guaranteed for success. As far as I went in the app, you don’t have re-orient the shapes so great for students who are still struggling with fine motor accuracy. I like the cute animations when you finish the page. Occupational therapists can work on finger isolation, visual discrimination. Nice part is there are no third party ads or in-app purchases.

Pearl Diver HD by Learning Games Lab, NM State University

This math game starts with you working with a basic number line and then moves on to activities on fractions. You get a diver and you have to move its boat to the right spot on the number line. It dives and you grab pearls all while avoiding electric eels. I only had a chance to play for a little bit. It is listed for grades 3-8, so hopefully it gets a little more complicated. Cool part is it doesn’t look too young so you could use it with older students who are still working on this skill level. There is a related app (free) by the same developer that is listed for middle school called Lobster diver that might be worth looking at too.

Alarmed ~ Reminders + Timers by Yoctoville
This reminder and timer app has a lot of features that combine visual timers and the reminders app on the iPad. Great for kids (or any age) who struggle with organization or staying on track who would benefit from a pop up reminder on the iPad to pay attention, write down homework, take meds, etc. You can set up categories, the defaults are home, work and shopping). You can also do location reminders. What makes this app stand out is a setting called “nag me”. It allows you to create a reminder that you can select intervals throughout the day. For example every minute (relentless), 5, 15, 30 and every hour. The tough part is you have to initiate the nag-me. There is a $4.99 in-app purchase to allow you to do advanced scheduling with the nag-me feature.
