I just taught an iPad for Special Education workshop yesterday at Special School District, so a warm welcome to all my new readers! I hope the links and reviews are helpful to you.
This week has a good selection of task-related and student tool apps (timers, to-do lists, APA citations) which is great for many ages! One of the task-related/manipulatives apps that I have done a review on in the past, Dotspace, was free back in December and is on sale again! (See task-related section for link).

Giggle Ghosts: Counting Fun! by Busy Bee Studios
Normally $0.99
Practice counting by playing games with laughing ghosts. For example a ghost drifts across the screen over a set of houses and you tap chimneys to bounce the ghost around. Each time you bounce a ghost the app counts aloud to you. With these games you are not only working on counting but also with visual perceptual and processing speed. The best part is there are no ads and in-app purchases. What I don't like is I can't figure out how to exit back to the first page to start the user over again during the middle of a game. I end up doing a force quit to get to the beginning. Download this now and save it for Halloween!

The Sounding Out Machine - Assistive Reading Device by FIZZBRAIN LLC

How this app works is the user types in a word and the app reads the word out loud, modeling how to sound out the word in syllables and then how to blend it. The camera and library mode is misleading. It sounds like it will do OCR, but it doesn't. Instead you are taking a snippet and pasting into typing mode. Then you have to copy the word from the picture and then it will read it to you. (It would just be easier to use typing mode while looking at a physical print copy). This app is great for students who independently want to hear how a word is pronounced or for a SLP or ELL teacher to work together with a student during instruction.

123QWERTY: Customize Keyboard Keys by 123-QWERTY LLC

Tired of the standard keyboard layout where you have to tap the globe just to get a 😀 or even worse having to tap on 2 buttons just to so you can get a $? This 3rd party keyboard has the number pad included with the standard layout and then you have an extra row above for you to customize within the 123QWERTY app. It's not perfect. The extra row takes up more screen space, so I end up typing with my iPad arranged as portrait instead of landscape. I also wish you could do keystrokes (like arrow keys) and I wish that when you were using a bluetooth keyboard, your custom bar still showed. The big bummer (well for some people) is I tried to use it with switch control. However, I couldn't get it to scan through the 3rd party keyboard. Remember with 3rd party keyboards, you download the app and then go to your iPad settings to add the keyboard (under general settings). Then you go back to the app to set up your custom row.

Forest Fighter by Zyrobotics LLC
This cause and effect game involves an airplane that is loaded up with water drops to put out the fire in the forest. You can select your difficulty level, speed of your airplane and so on to customize for your user. The part I really like about this app is that it's switch accessible and does not look baby-ish. In addition, you can use almost any keyboard stroke as the switch hit, so it is easy to set up using switch interfaces. Or if you don’t want to use a switch you can press any key on a bluetooth keyboard to play. Who doesn’t like options?!?
