This app has been around awhile, but it still is a favorite of many students. This app works on addition and multiplication facts and is made by the same folks who make the Fast Math curriculum. Your sushi monster is surrounding by a conveyer belt of sushi like an all you can eat restaurant. Each plate has numbers that you have to match up to make a problem that is plastered on the chest of your sushi monster. If you get your math problem set up correctly, your sushi monster gets to eat! If you get it wrong, it gets ticked off and sends your plates back. Like many math apps that are game based, there are trophies and stars to collect as you do your problems. Like many games, I wish you could pick problem sets.

I can’t believe it’s December already! I actually had a little time to do reviews today, which is pretty exciting! Heads up there was not a lot of apps for elementary level beyond the set of math apps by McGraw-Hill (which has gone free several times in the past). Instead I did a review of a teacher tool. I also wanted to pass on a link for those who are not aware of some of the new accessibility features that come with iOS 10. Enjoy!

I am reviewing the app mostly to warn you! It’s a simple quiz app where you have to identify elements on the periodic table. It has multiple choice, spelling the elements, flashcards, timed game, etc. The games are fine. When you finish a set it will open up to a mini game that involves shooting soldiers, including blood! It also has ads (which you can spend $0.99 to remove). Some parents maybe okay with their children using the app with shooting game at the end (games can be motivating!), but I would probably not use this app in the classroom.

This is a quick and easy tally app. You set up and name each category (prompts, incorrect, etc.) and then open it and tap to make tally marks. I would not have students use this because when you add a category it puts in a sample that you change. The first one I got was “days out of prison”, others are cups of coffee, etc. There isn’t a way to email data, so you would need to use screen shots. I also recommend putting the date on each category so you can track data over time.

Simple and easy app to drill math facts. You can select addition, subtraction, multiplication and division either individually or mix them up. There is customization available for example you can change the number of problems, select manipulative models and assistance (number line, blocks, hints) and you can change the arrangement from vertical, horizontal or mixed. What I don’t like is there isn’t a way to to have the problem read to you, even if you use the speak screen feature on the iPad.
