Copyright-ness
One of my reviews brings up a hairy issue: copyright and accessible educational materials. The app involves taking pictures of worksheets and then typing on it (SnapType). This is not the only app that does the function of digitizing papers, so I wanted to bring it up generally, not just specific to this app. Some of the worksheets used in classrooms are copyrighted and you will need to do further investigation on if you are able to legally take a picture of it and type on top of it. A widely held myth is that just because it is for educational use for school and no one is going to sell it, it's okay. Another myth is if you own a copy of the workbook, you are welcome to scan and alter it as you would like. Sadly, it's not so cut and dry. The law is actually unclear and confusing and you maybe violating copyright law without even knowing it. I would talk to your administrator/principal or possibly your librarian for assistance on how to proceed. Your child or student may qualify for a print disability (a copyright exemption under the Chaffee amendment) or your actions may fall under fair use. Yet even then, fair use or a print disability's copyright exemptions may not apply to a student typing on a document. It may only apply to having it in a digital format for reading. It's actually a complex issue! Anyway, here is a website to get you started:

This app works on sorting, simple problem solving and visual memory. Occupational Therapists can also work on finger isolation and visual discrimination. Like all apps from this developer, the games, graphics and animations are designed for very young users. (i.e. your older users may think the app is too babyish). Beware of ads! Most of them are in a banner, so I would consider using the accessibility features in your iPad called guided access for this app. You can cover the advertisements and make them un-clickable.

Animals Math Balance for Kids HD by Toward Inc.

In this app you need to come up with multiple ways to make up a sum. It gives you a boulder on a scale with a number on it and you have to pick two weights that match the value. It visually builds the math problem as you put the weights on. The age range for the app said 6-8, but based on what I see kids do in school, it's more appropriate for kindergartners (5-6 year olds). Just a warning, the music is annoying. Even worse, it has a juke box so you can listen to the app's music again and again. I highly recommend headphones on this app!

Calendoodle - The Pen and Ink Whiteboard Calendar by Fishington Studios

Do you have a student who does best with all their papers on their iPad, but misses their paper calendar? This app is simple and easy to use. Just tap on the day and handwrite your entries. I probably wouldn't use this as a homework organizer (there isn't enough room), but as a standard calendar where you could track big projects, tests or extracurricular activities. I would consider using an iPad stylus if you are not used to using your finger to write.

SnapType is a picture annotation app where you snap a picture of a document and then you can type on top of it. It's a must for students with illegible, slow or laborious handwriting. You can save it in a folder in the app or share it as a pdf or image. The font size is super easy to change and you can also hold and drag the text boxes to where you need them. The pro version has unlimited number of documents available and advanced photo editing, but most of my students get what they need from the free version. The app isn't perfect. I wish there was a way to have a pen tool to circle things and I also wish there was a highlighter. Unfortunately, it also does not link to Google Drive and Dropbox. Remember to consider copyright law when taking pictures of documents!
