Appy Friday 5/22/15

Last day of school! Last day of school! Last day of school!

Well, sorta. My kids are out today. Though technically it's my last day too, I work summer school as a school based Occupational Therapist and also have some additional hours as an AT specialist to cover summer school/districts still in session. So I have to go back to work on Tuesday. I always think that my summer is going to be relaxing. Yeah…wrong. Summer school for me is just as crazy as the school year, just I drive to different places.
Personally, the best part of summer is I'm thrilled that I don't have to supervise/nag my own children to get their homework done everyday!

Now summer does mean my weekly Appy Friday posts will be more sporadic. It all depends on if I am traveling or perhaps floating in a pool somewhere. Anyway, have an appy holiday weekend!

Goumy Sort by Sebastien Carceles
Normally $0.99
*Also free on Android, see android section for link
This is a super cute colors/shapes sorting activity. What I like about it is it starts in a field of two and as you do well, it increases the field. The student drags the item into the labeled tubes and you get instant feedback in a speech bubble. I wish it took data and allowed you to select what to sort. Occupational therapists can work on finger isolation and visual discrimination.

Flashcard Ninja 1-20 by BeBoop (addition & subtraction)
normally $1.99
Honestly, math fact practice can be boring. So it's nice to have a free app to rotate in the mix of apps you may already have. And who doesn't like ninjas? The app reads the problem out loud which is good for students who need visual and auditory information paired together. Then you select your answer from moving up and down a minimized number line. If you get it right, your ninja will attack the wooden shaped number and knock it over or slice it up. Hi-ya! The app only goes up to number 20, so this is good for younger math students.

Molecule Notes - Simple and Powerful Text Notes by Fishington Studios
Normally $1.99
This reminds me of a sticky note app where you enter text and then it is displayed on a background. Once you are done with a note your only choices are to copy, print, message or email. What I mostly liked about it is the extremely clean and simple interface. Good for students who need limited options to do best or are early distracted by lots of buttons on the page.

Appy Friday 5/15/15

Appy Friday iPad/Android Users!
Hope you are staying dry in all of the rain we have been having! This week there are several note-taking and planning apps for older students this week. But in general, there seems to be less apps on sale than normal. No worries though, there is always next week! :)
Happy Downloading,

Clicky Land -Educational App by Hisashi Maeda
Normally $1.99
Clicky land is a cause and effect app for very beginning, young iPad users. There two buttons. One that makes your guy jump and then other that spits out marbles. Letters and pictures float across the screen and your job is to hit the items and it will identify them (reminds me of collecting coins on Ninentendo Mario Brothers). A little seal pops up from the ground and that is where you spit out the marble to stop it from bumping into you. Special Educators can use this to teach letter awareness. Occupational Therapists can work on finger isolation, visual discrimination, visual processing speed and accuracy.

Elementary
Math on the Farm by WebTeam Corporation
normally $1.99
Math on the Farm works on simple addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and fraction word and number problems with a farm theme. If you get it wrong or don't answer the question in the time allotted, it will move onto the next problem so you are not just promoting errorless learning. It gives a cute animation with the correct answer and the problems are read aloud for students who need reading support. It gives your score at the end of the problem set. What I don't like is the problems are timed and there is this clicking noise which I find really distracting (and for some kids might be anxiety producing). You can't turn the timer off, though you can give them a lot of time. I also don't like that you can't hop to the main screen to change the settings when you are in middle of the problem set, you have to exit the app and go back in. I also didn't see a way to email your results, you would have to snap a screen shot.

iPlaniShare by NutriSoft LTD
Normally $2.99
If you wanted to put your entire life in a binder, this would be it! It is an all in one planner that includes schedules, to do lists, regular lists, projects, weekly goals, monthly goals, business ledger, personal ledger, exercise, meal planner, recipes, and cleaning. It has options for reminder alerts and prioritizing. If you are doing collaborative projects, you can share sections of your planner that they can view (projects, todos). It is fairly easy to use but if you aren't sure what to do, it comes with video tutorials by tapping on the help. What I really liked about it, is it fits a need for high school students who are working on more functional life skills and don't need traditional homework planners. Students could share their lists with peers and teachers who are going on the same community outing or share it with parents or caregivers. The app then easily transitions for all kids out of high school to keep their life in order.

Always free, Always awesome
Tell Time Little Match Ups Games by Innovative Investments Limited
Tell time works on matching two pictures of clocks, one analog and one digital. The student drags the items on the left to the matching clock on the right side. The app is easily customizable, you can select what time increments are tested, the number of items on a page (from 2-8), change game sounds and most importantly, the ability to add additional pictures and record your own voice. This way you can take pictures of clocks in your school or community environment to make sure your student can apply their knowledge to their own world. The only thing I don't like is it only has an errorless learning mode, so there is no way to receive data. You will need to use a different app for this purpose.

Ask Me Colors and Shapes Preschool and Kindergarten Core Skills Preparation by Eggroll Games LLC
Normally $3.99
*Also available on Android! (see link at the end of this email)
If your student likes Brown Bear, Brown Bear and learns with music, this is a great app. I like that it works matching/identification of colors and shapes with jazzy background music. Matching/Indentification is from a field of three to six. It's errorless, if you tap the wrong thing, it just drops out of the line up. Even though   it's errorless, I still wish it took data. Occupational Therapists can work on finger isolation and visual discrimination.

Elementary
Mathsplat - Alien Addition by Justin Hughes (ages 6-8)
Normally $1.99
As you solve one to two digit addition problems with a number line, you are rewarded with getting slimed by an alien and winning parts to your rocket for a rocket game. I like the number line a lot, it's easy to use and make sense. There are teacher settings that allows you to customize what the student is working on. Even if you want to use the app right away, I recommend opening the settings and removing the ads. The kid who is reading the problems is British, so some students may find it hard to understand the voice.

Statistics Pro by Larry Feldman
Normally $0.99
*Also available on Android, but not free today
Okay, I'm not running around doing binomial distributions all day, so I can't really tell you if this app is really amazing or not. However, based on what I messed around with in a few minutes, I thought it was simple app to use. Just pop in some numbers and tap "analyze"! Some of the functions have examples to help you figure out if you are doing the right thing.

Always free, Always Awesome
SchoolKit Math by Scott Glickman (ages 6-8)
Going with the math theme (and also I suggested it today in a meeting), I wanted to share Schookit Math. It is not an app with problems to solve, but a manipulative app that you use alongside your math activities. This is great for students who need manipulatives regularly or have fine motor difficulties that prevent them from using traditional objects. It includes 24 different tools (examples: fraction kit, number line, bar graph, clocks). You create a homepage with up to 10 tools on it is easy for students to find what they need.
