Appy Friday 4/24/15

Hi iPad/Android users!
This week's free apps seem to have a focus on elementary level students. I am going to try something new this week. I am adding a section in my reviews of an app that is always free and that I personally recommend to my IEP teams on a regular basis. Also, I would like to sincerely thank all of my readers who have been telling their colleagues and community members about my blog!

Appy Friday!

NumberShapes Line by Andrew Fenner
normally $0.99
This app is a number line manipulative for numbers 1-20 that is simple, clean and without ads. As someone who works in Special Education, I recommend real objects for counting. However, you may consider this app for a student who has a physical impairment or other disability that prevents the child from using typical counting objects. To use the app, you either move a slider or swipe to add manipulative to the number line. This app is actually good for both pre-K and Kindergarten. Preschool students would use the counting feature. Kindergartners can use the   addition/subtraction feature. OTs can use this app for working on left-to right eye tracking and finger isolation.

Elementary
Numbees and the world of math by Sompom
Normally $1.99
In my opinion, practicing math facts is a great iPad activity. Most students can do this independently and who doesn't need practice? Numbees works on basic math facts where you pick your answer from a grid. The app is in a game format where you get levels and star ratings like I'm playing cut the rope. It's timed, so I wouldn't use this with a student who has slow processing or who find timers anxiety producing. For OTs who have students whose math skills are a strength/favorite activity, this is a fun way to work on visual scanning and visual discrimination.

Middle/High School:
Ruminate by Toward Entelechy
normally $4.99
Most of the graphic organizing apps for the iPad seem to just be web makers of bubbles with lines. I typically recommend Inspiration Maps (there is a lite version) because it comes with education templates and it has this great brainstorming feature. However, if your student prefers to make his or her own from scratch, Ruminate is definitely worth looking into. The strength of this app is the integration of the internet research. You tap a globe icon and it pops you into google search box. Then there are two buttons where you can add information into a bubble and to your bibliography.   The other thing I like about it is that you can back up a text version to almost all the different cloud storage apps I like to use (Google Drive, DropBox, Evernote, Push Bullet) and 'open in' word processing/note-taking apps like Pages, Notability and Paperport notes. Just beware of ads!

Always Free & Always Awesome Pick of the Week:
myHomework Student Planner by Rodrigo Neri
Free but with ads and in-app purchases
MyHomework is a homework organizing, device agnostic app. When I say device agnostic, it means its available on iPad, Android, Mac, Windows, and Chromebook. You start by starting a free account, then adding your classes and then homework. It syncs to the account in the cloud, so you can use this on your school computer, public library, chromebook, phone, whatever! The great part is you can set reminders and categorize your assignments/projects by priority level. There are a bunch of other features, but honestly, I focus on the basics for my Special Education students.

It's a little light on the interactive books today, but there are some great elementary level Math apps to make up for it.

My First Keyboard by aacorn
Normally $1.99
My First keyboard is an onscreen keyboard with 4 layouts: letter shaped animals (the animal is the first letter of the animal name), numbers, lower case letters with a light background and lower case letters with a high contrast dark background. One of the settings allows you to select alphabet order. This app is a way to introduce young children to the concept of an on-screen keyboard. Depending on the age and development of the child, you may choose the standard qwerty layout or alphabet. This app is not a stand alone app, but an alternate onscreen keyboard (aka 3rd party keyboard). How it works is you download the app and then you go into the settings of your iPad and add the keyboard. You tap the globe icon to switch between the standard keyboard and this keyboard. Now, why would you provide a keyboard to a young child or a child who developmentally needs this support? I went to this session at Closing the Gap (an Assistive Technology conference in Minnesota) where the presenters Gretchen Hauser and Caroline Musselwhite shared research on writing development. Children start scribbling and making approximations of letters and words before they start writing their name. If you have a child who physically cannot hold a writing tool (or for some kids have no interest in writing utensils), this is a way to give the child access to letters. But maybe you just want a high contrast or fun looking keyboard! It's worth trying.

Elementary
Teachley: Mt. Multiplis by Teachley
Normally $2.99
This is an adventure based math app where you have to complete problems to earn money to move your guy around the screen for coins. The app is a little confusing to use at first, but once I messed around a little, I was able to get it. You work on multiplication problems by using models to fill an area of a rectangle. This is great for students who are unable to use standard manipulatives or just need a lot of practice using the models to solve problems.  If you create a free teacher account, it will take data for you and save your student's progress in the app. What I didn't like about it is that it was not customizable in terms of content or features other than turning the music on/off.

Middle/High school
ThinkBook - Write, Plan, Outline and Take Notes by Bitolithic Pty Ltd
Normally $3.99
If you are a Dropbox user and like outline formatted notes and todo lists, this app is good fit for you. The app does a lot, but my favorite feature is tagging. This allows you to organize your notes in multiple ways without having to move anything around. What I don't like is that you can't share to Google Drive, which is one of the top tools my middle and high school students are using.

Kids Colorful Number by BRAVE SPRINT
Normally $0.99
Kid Colorful number works on counting objects with 1:1 correspondence, tapping larger numbers in order, missing number, and biggest/smallest. For OTs, this also works on visual discrimination and finger isolation. The app has simple graphics and animations, so this would be good for kids who do best with limited distractions. I didn't like the sound effects, so I would consider muting them.

Elementary
Sports Reading Comprehension for Boys and Girls Age 9-11 by Peekaboo Studios LLC
normally $2.99
This app comes with 12 nonfiction stories that are focused on sports and includes basic reading comprehension questions (what is the main idea, what happened first, events in the story). There are no pictures and does not look like it is for little kids, so this is great for your sport-loving middle/high school students who are reading at a lower grade level. If your student is low vision or working on listening comprehension, I tested speak screen (accessibility feature that is available with iOS 8) with the book and it works for the entire passage including the comprehension questions!!!! And it gets better...the app takes data and you can email it to yourself. Yay!
*Also on Android (but its $2.99)

Middle/High school
Solve - A colorful graphing calculator by Pomegranate Apps
normally $1.99
There are many graphing calculators out there, but the buttons are either little or its tough to navigate and figure out what to do. This app launches with the tutorial going to make sure you know how it works. The calculator functions are separated into multiple color coded pages that you swipe. This would be good for students who need a graphing calculator, but with not all the functions showing on the single page and feel comfortable with working with multiple pages.
