FYI: The number one question I get from my iPad users about this blog is asking how long the apps are free. The bad news is…most of the apps are only on sale today. In fact, some apps end their sale at 10pm tonight! A few apps stay free for the weekend or a whole month. A few apps make this list because they were a paid app in the past, but today are making their debut as a free app and will be free for a long time/from now on. The best thing to do if you missed reading this on Friday: Go through the list and open up ones you really want with your fingers crossed. If it went back to its original price, use this app called App Price Drops. You can search apps and then set an email alert to you for when it goes free again.

Early Childhood:

This app has two parts, the first is shape exploration and then tap an icon to start a receptive identification activity. This app has very young graphics, so I wouldn't use it in elementary grades, only in an early childhood setting.

Frog game has several sets of matching games that work on speech and language skills such as receptive identification, phonetics, phonemic awareness, etc. It has cute graphics and leveled in a path like you are playing Candy Crush.

Here is a very simple to do list that would fit a student who wants a clean interface. Note that this is an iPod/Phone app, so it is zoomed so the graphics are not as crisp on an iPad. In addition, if you are using a 3rd party keyboard in iOS 8, you may have problems with the keyboard format and will need to go back to the default iPad keyboard. Supposedly you can change features but when I went into the preferences, but the app kept quitting on its own/crashing. The main features worked fine for me though.

Is your student having problems visually with the standard iPad keyboard? You can change the font size, background and text color using MyKees. It does require set up both in your settings of the iPad as well as opening up the app. In the app itself, begin with selecting a theme and then using the slide button to play with opacity and hue. If does not have all the colors I would like for students with disabilities (bright contrasting colors), however they have a very dark gray keys with white letters that is the closet you are going to get with high contrast. The main issue I don't like with it is that you can't access the iPad's built in word prediction for iOS 8. This may be a good keyboard for a co:writer or read write gold user.
