Appy Friday! 5/23/14

Picks, picks and more app picks!

Early Childhood

Touch Follow alphabet by Hatchworks Ltd (normally $0.99)
Coloring app that will color alphabet shapes even within a quarter inch. Great for introducing letters while working on coloring skills and finger isolation. In addition, it has a simple black background and could be helpful for cortically blind students.

Lipa Eggs by Lipa Learning SRO (normally $2.99)

This app works on matching colors, following patterns and mixing colors. If you make a mistake you get a cloth to clean the egg and start over. Works on finger isolation and visual discrimination.
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/lipa-eggs/id706012651?mt=8

Elementary

Addjumper - An additional game to focus your mind by Elsa Cantuna (normally $0.99)

This is a math game with 21 levels that reminds me a little of Subway Surfers (but simpler graphics).  You run along the track and touch the answer in time to jump the train before you get squashed. It's a little unforgiving, so its good for students with good visual perceptual speed. I don't think it focuses your mind, but it is fun.

SMART adventures Mission Math by Kata Enterprises, Inc (normally $4.99)

This is an interactive math adventure where the user  completes mini-games. Designed for girls ages 9 and above. You start out by personalizing your avatar. It comes with math help if you don't understand what to do. However, you need to be able to read the instructions, tutoring information and questions. Overall the app is cute, but you have to get through a lot of dialogue to get to the math (but you can touch the skip button thankfully).

Appy Friday! 5/16/14

Below are this weeks picks. This week there are some good freebies for math!

Early Childhood:

Lipa Dots by Lipa Learning s.r.o. (normally $0.99)
This is a group of errorless dot-to-dot activities with visual cues. You select a shape in a visual scene and when you complete the dot to dot it puts the completed picture in its place in the picture. It includes 72 pictures that are spaced across 10 levels. Great for preschool teachers and Occupational Therapists who are working on visual tracking and sequencing. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/lipa-dots/id739954441?mt=8

Alphabet Gaga by Vidhur Voora (normally $0.99)
This app has activities that work on exposure to the alphabet (upper and lower case) and words that start with that initial letter. It integrates some fine motor swiping and visual discrimination for Occupational Therapists as well. The computerized voice and graphics are not so great, but still worth getting it for free. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/alphabet-gaga/id871610532?mt=8

Elementary:

Quick Math Plus by Shiny Things (normally $1.99)
This app was made by the same folks who made Quick Clocks which I reviewed earlier this spring. Works on basic math facts, pre-algebra (find the missing number), comparing sums (greater than/less than). You handwrite the answers instead of selecting from a field or typing. It has four levels beginner through extreme. If you are familiar with the app Lumosity, it has a similar sound effects and interface. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/quick-math+/id703287370?mt=8

Bonsai Slice by Playground Theory (normally $2.99)
This app is very similar to fruit ninja where you slice food and not bombs. However inside of swiping all over the screen, you hold the entire iPad and move it around to slice with your virtual sword. It is great for Occupational Therapists who have an iPad in a durable case. It works on visual discrimination and hand-eye coordination. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/bonsai-slice/id761167894?mt=8

AppTutor AWP - Addition Word Problems by PadStar Publishing (normally $0.99)
App Tutor makes several math apps that are aligned with common core standards. All their math apps include a tutorial and practice activity. You can download worksheets and a hint sheet (study sheet). https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/apptutor-awp-addition-word/id569979671?mt=8

Middle-High School apps:

Math 42 by Cogeon GmbH (normally $0.99)

Type in any problems and then it provides the answer and steps on how it was solved. It also has a training mode. For an OT who doesn't teach math, I thought it was intuitive to use and great for homework help. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/math-42/id664457128?mt=8

ClassApp: Biology by Stephanie Halldorson
Introductory app (today is the last day it's free). It's a virtual binder of Biology study tips including tips on writing abstracts, lab reports, critical reviews and bibliographies. It's designed for college students so it would be a good reference for high schoolers taking AP Bio. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/classapp-biology/id853824452?mt=8

Other apps that are free today (that I didn't get to!):
Xsolve by Emanuel Jarnea (algebraic problem solver)

Be S.M.A.R.T. by Mikhail Nikonorov  (write and track SMART goals)

Tody by Peter Drejer (special todo list for household cleaning routines)

SkyDocs by Oleksandr Romanov (file manager and document storage)

Unit Converter by Pinch Multimedia (angle, area, currency, weight, volume, etc.)

Annie's Picking Apples 2 by Real Fun Learning (basic math skills)

Memagine by Quatrian Inc. (memory activity)

Complete Me! by YesApps LLC (complete partial pictures, works on visual closure)

LiPa Train by Lipa Learning s.r.o. (works on preschool level logic/science)

Free Apps I thought were just fair or poor (and were quickly deleted, so download with reservations):
rechenapp by Wolfgang Loechteken
-The graphics are nonexistent. The app is for math facts (and probably other skills, but there is no information at all on the iTunes Preview) and if you get a problem wrong, you go back to the beginning.

Baby Emotions by I Can Do Apps
-I really like the photos of babies with captions. However, there is no auditory labeling of the pictures just the option for lullaby music that sounds like it belongs on a bad Baby Einstein DVD.

Subtracting Sardines HD by Marcel Widarto

This app works on learning subtraction by kids entering in their own problems and using the sardines to count them. It allows negative numbers and the manipulatives for this situation doesn't make sense. I think it would confuse students instead of help them.

Now tech that!

Appy Friday! 5/9/14

This Friday will send your students off kilter! Many of the educational apps I found free today involved 'tilt' games. This is also great for Occupational Therapists working hand-eye coordination and mixes things up from just tapping and dragging everything.
Remember many of these apps work for many age groups!

Apps for Early Childhood:

123 KIDS FUN NUMBERS by RosMedia (normally $1.99)
Kids fun numbers has several activities all working on counting from 1-10 (say numbers, show numbers, number identification). Occupational Therapists can work on visual perceptual (eye tracking, visual discrimination) and fine motor skills (fine motor precision, dragging).

Tap to Unlock by RTC Hubs Limited (normally $4.99)
This is a game that works on tapping the iPad screen. Good for Occupational Therapists working on finger isolation and visual processing speed. Beware of ads though!

Apps for Elementary:

The Maze Tilt Game by Geeky Lemon Development  (normally $0.99)
This is a tilt game where you have to make one block slide and touch another block. At first the track is the whole page and then it narrows it down and adds the maze as you get better at tilting. Occupational Therapists will like this app for eye tracking and hand-eye coordination. Beware of ads!

Skip Math: Skip Counting Games by Justin Holladay (normally $0.99)
This is a tilt game like doodle jump that works on skip counting. You can select the number that you are skip counting by and work on how far you can get skip counting. It takes a little time to get used to how it works, so make sure you work on it and demonstrate it to your student so they don't get too frustrated. Occupational Therapists can work on eye-hand coordination, eye tracking and visual processing speed.

Apps for Middle/High:

Writeable by SecondGuess Aps (normally $9.99)
This is a word prediction app that will read the choices to you (swipe horizontally to preview). It has some phonetic spelling support. Writeable has an OCR feature (take a picture and it translates it to text). When I tried the OCR feature it took several minutes to process and then it all came out as garbage.

Adobe Voice by Adobe (I couldn't find its typical price)
Make an easy voice annotated videos using camera, your photo roll or creative commons photos. It has a built in tutorial to help you get going, but it's pretty intuitive otherwise.
