To my Speech Language Pathologist friends: I feel like you typically get slim pickings. Good news! This week SLP apps are the star of the show!

FYI: The number one question I get from my iPad users about this blog is asking how long the apps are free. The bad news is…most of the apps are only on sale today. In fact, some apps end their sale at 10pm tonight! A few apps stay free for the weekend or a whole month. A few apps make this list because they were a paid app in the past, but today are making their debut as a free app and will be free for a long time/from now on. The best thing to do if you missed reading this on Friday: Go through the list and open up ones you really want with your fingers crossed. If it went back to its original price,  use this app called App Price Drops. You can search apps and then set an email alert to you for when it goes free again.

This app has two parts, the first is shape exploration and then tap an icon to start a receptive identification activity. This app has very young graphics, so I wouldn't use it in elementary grades, only in an early childhood setting.

Frog game has several sets of matching games that work on speech and language skills such as receptive identification, phonetics, phonemic awareness, etc. It has cute graphics and leveled in a path like you are playing Candy Crush.

Here is a very simple to do list that would fit a student who wants a clean interface. Note that this is an iPod/Phone app, so it is zoomed so the graphics are not as crisp on an iPad. In addition, if you are using a 3rd party keyboard in iOS 8, you may have problems with the keyboard format and will need to go back to the default iPad keyboard. Supposedly you can change features but when I went into the preferences, but the app kept quitting on its own/crashing. The main features worked fine for me though.

Is your student having problems visually with the standard iPad keyboard? You can change the font size, background and text color using  MyKees. It does require set up both in your settings of the iPad as well as opening up the app. In the app itself, begin with selecting a theme and then using the slide button to play with opacity and hue. If does not have all the colors I would like for students with disabilities (bright contrasting colors), however they have a very dark gray keys with white letters that is the closet you are going to get with high contrast. The main issue I don't like with it is that you can't access the iPad's built in word prediction for iOS 8. This may be a good keyboard for a co:writer or read write gold user.

I love the little animations that it includes.  It would be really great for handwriting practice because does not have some of the other features I like to see in handwriting apps like changing fonts, adding your own word list, phasing out dotted lines, etc..

Super simple and clean to-do list. Just type in your task, press a dot and it's added to your list on the left of the screen and also to your notifications at the same time. You can tap, hold and drag an item to reorder it. When you finish the task, you just swipe the text on your list to the right and it automatically takes it off your list. This app works on matching colors, shapes and numbers from floating balloons. Balloon will overlap so you can tap and move them over to reveal their hidden item.  It works on matching skills of course, but for OTs, they will like the visual discrimination, figure ground, finger isolation and visual processing speed. I would start with the matching colors, because you don't have to worry about overlapping balloons. The thing I didn't like about it is the font they used, the four looks like an upside down h. I would use this for matching shapes and colors only.

Interactive story about a guy with a cupcake for a head. The child can tap on different things on the page to activate animations. Many early learning books, the child presses a button to turn the page, this one you swipe like iBooks. For OTs, this works on visual discrimination and finger isolation. The only thing I wished it did was read with highlighting.

This app you select four main emotions: happy, sad, angry, and scared. They give a short background story and then the student has to match: eyebrows, eyes and mouth. For a free app, it was pretty good. With an in app purchase you can purchase disgust, embarrassed, surprised, tired, bored and uneasy. However, some of the eye selections were very similar and you may consider working on it ahead of time so you can explain what the differences are to your student. For OTs and Special Educators this would be a great supplementary activity for Zones of Regulation curriculum. OTs can also use this to practice finger isolation and dragging skills.

iEducation actually has all of its math tutorial apps for free and these links are listed below. This app allows you to watch videos on how to solve various math problems. (Beware of ads). I would not just push this app out to students to be used as a reference. There is just too much tutorials to sift through and I highly doubt any student would watch these just for kicks. However, this would be a great resource for teachers who want to do a flipped classroom but do not have the time to make a video for every lesson or just getting started with flipped classrooms.

This app has a visual scene where you can tap different items (sun, buildings) and it does a cute animation. If you tap on a door and you are able to create some artwork and then sign your name. The reason this app sparked my interest is that one of the sessions I went to the Closing the Gap conference talked about giving kids meaningful times to work on writing his or her name besides when they are in OT. Like the presenters recommended, it is not tracing their name, but gives them a chance to write their name wherever they are in the process (random scribbles or letters, first letter, etc.)

Many of the students I support are reading below grade level and need to have things read to them on the fly (following copyright law/for students with print disabilities). I feel like I have tried a million scanners with OCR (optical character recognition). I'm exaggerating of course, but my experience has been that I take the picture and when I do the OCR, it only gets a portion of it correctly (rest is garbage and then text to speech is spelling everything). This one worked fairly well. After it did it's thing, I opened it into Pages and was able to use the speak selection/speak screen feature in accessibility features to read to me. I also had options to open it in several other apps I use for text to speech. It still got several words wrong with the OCR, but it's been the best results I have had so far. However, I'm always looking for a better solution, especially one that does all the features (I have been disappointed on my search so far). So PLEASE, if you also have a good scanner + OCR + Text to speech app, please email me!
