Appy Friday 1/27/17

Hello readers!

If you didn’t read my post last week, I attended the Assistive Technology Industry Association Conference in Florida. Now that I have returned, the information I learned is scattered between flyers, notes, pictures on my phone and in my head! I decided I am going to share a little bit each week whilst I organize everything. The information from the conference isn’t just apps! I included some free websites and Chrome apps and extensions too.

ATIA free resources

TextDetective (search and download from iPhone apps, you can use it on both devices)

Scanner app where you take a picture with your iPad and then it will OCR the text. Then bring it into a text to speech app or on an iPad 4 or above, use the speak selection or speak screen to listen to the text.

This is a audio recorder that you can take pictures while you are recording to help mark where you are. Great for recording lectures while taking pictures of the board.

Text Fairy (ANDROID)

This is a scanner app with OCR (optical character recognition). This allows you to scan text and then put it in the format that can be read to the user (text to speech).

Grammarly (Chrome Extension)

Grammar check online in real time!

Rewordify.com (free website tool)

Copy your text in and click “rewordify text”. It’s like an auto thesaurus, swapping more complex words to words that are easier to understand.

textcompactor.com (free online tool)

Copy and paste a passage and select the percentage of text you want to retain. Then the summarized text will appear in the box below. This is similar to the auto-summarize feature that used to be in Microsoft Word.

Appy Friday 1/20/17

Appy ATIA Friday!

I am blogging from the Assistive Technology Industry Association conference. I can't help but be a little mean to my St. Louis readers...it's in Orlando, Florida. I'm wearing sandals. The pool has a waterfall. But don't be too jealous. I'm actually inside nearly all day gathering as much new and exciting information for my teams and upcoming workshops. Ideament by Nosleep Software

Mind Mapping (Lite version) that allows you to make graphic organizers for writing. What I found interesting is each cell has a two text boxes. One that will be a title and then information underneath.

IssieBoard by Beit Issie Shapiro

Customizable third party keyboard that just released this week with an English keyboard the US store. There are several apps that are available to set up customized colors on your keyboard, but this one is more in depth in features. You can color code by row and columns, not just the whole keyboard. But I was really excited that you can hide letters for students. This is great for OTs who need scaffolded typing instruction, students who need to work on typing their name, giving just the letters they need to do an assignment, etc.

This is a interval alarm, so you can have an alarm that is daily, weekly, hourly, and minutes. Every 10 minutes you can have an alarm to cue a student to pay attention, weight shift in a wheelchair, etc.

It also has a snooze feature.

This is a creation and presentation tool for students and teachers. You can make digital stories, lessons, custom ecards, etc.

Classkick by Classwork Co

This is a presentation tool that is similar to the app Explain Everything. It's multi-media way to create presentation materials with images, links, video, It is available in many devices.

A timer that easily lets you implement the pomodoro technique. This where you work for a concentrated period of time and then take a short break.
