Appy Friday readers!
I finally had time to write some reviews. Sorry for their absence! There are not a lot of apps this week, but there are a couple expensive ones that are free, so I guess it all balances out. Remember that just because I listed an app in an age group or category, it doesn't mean it only works for that category. A good example is the app I listed for middle-high school called Dotspace. Its main use is as a simple to do list but I could easily see it used for choices, schedules, counting, spelling and more!
Have a great weekend,
Betsy
REVIEWS!
Early Childhood
Shape Sorting Prof by Education Terra
Normally $6.99
The app has two activities. The first activity (playground) involves a set of objects are splattered on the top of the screen and the student just touches and drags into the bins. The other activity (factory) involves objects hung on a moving line and you pull them off as the move along and place it in the bin. Every time that you sort it correctly, you get points. If it is incorrect, it subtracts points and snaps it back into the pile for you to try again. Beyond using it to apply understanding of shapes, Occupational Therapists can use this app to work on figure ground, visual tracking and visual discrimination as well as finger isolation.
Elementary
Expanding Language by Special Learning, Inc. (Ages 6-8)
Normally $39.99
This language app works on vocabulary using photographs. It has 15 categories from plants and trees to food and school supplies. The app is designed for students who require communication supports, it has four icons on the top to request help, break, sick and bathroom. Most of the words that come with the program are nouns, but you are able to add/edit your own pictures and categories. What I like about it is that it takes data showing the number of times a student selected an item, so you know what categories need more exposure or you can use it as a way to learn preferred items and activities. I wish in the edit area you could add color coding/borders to the categories/items.
Middle-High
DotSpace - Colorful Grid Checklist Organizer by Adams Immersive
Normally $3.99
This is an alternate to do list that isn't a linear fashion at all. You tap and hold anywhere on the screen and a circle pops up. You add text, change the color/shape if you like and tap the check mark and your'e done. You can't write a lot of text on the bubbles, so it wouldn't be good for a homework organizer, but simple to do's or visual reminders would be great. I wish it had more shape choices and the ability put pictures or emojis on there. However, I am loving this app is I see a ton of uses in school and home.
You could also use this as a:
-math manipulative for counting
-learning colors
-single word visual schedule
-letters for spelling
-simple choice board
-single words to practice building sentences
-counters for games (We play Munchkins board game at home and this is going to be AWESOME!)
Always Free, Always Awesome
Long Division Touch by Regular Berry Software
Lite or Classroom $1.99 iOS; Free Android
This math app is a supplementary activity that covers long division basics, place value, remainders and decimals. The app provides step by step written instructions with visual models and then then student interacts with the problems by dragging down numbers and tapping plus and minus to add digits. student drags down numbers and selects numbers. The free version provides a small set of problems, the full version have unlimited problems. The only thing I would change is I wish the instructions could be read out loud, either within the app or using the speak screen option.
