Using the same characters from other Eggroll games, this is a simple sticker activity where kids drag animals into a visual scene. Then you can tap each one to get a sound effect. Simple but fun!

This is a good app for early elementary students who are just learning how to apply blending sounds to spell words. You select either random words or a word list. Words are thrown out on a landscape and then it splits it into sounds. You tap the sounds to build the words as it says the sounds. It's errorless, you get it wrong and it bonks for you. The next activity is to drag initial, middle or ending sounds with shapes as a visual support. For some students they may not know what the shapes are, so you may want to test it out before using with some students. There are some animated rewards not just at the end of the question set but in the middle as you go, which is nice.

You can use this app for many age levels, but the idea is you tap the generate button and it will give you weird 3 word combinations (thinking great jaguar). It was designed to break up writer's block. I think it would also be interesting to use as an age appropriate handwriting activities for Occupational Therapists or a way to work on categorization. You can pick sets, make your own or set up rules. So you can just work on colors and food for example. Note it is actually an iPhone app, so it shows only in portrait mode and zoomed. When I tried to share my favorites, it crashed. You can't complain when it's free!

As an Occupational Therapist, I'm always looking for ways to kids to do age appropriate, educational activities while working on motor skills. Remember that cognitive load is very important when learning a new skill, even motor skills. Meaning…if you are working on motor skills, do not use this with a student who is also working on multiplication skills. And vice versa! you want to use this app for multiplication, make sure that the motor skill isn't hard for them. Anyways, its a marble maze where you tilt the iPad around to solve problems. I really like that you can pick the problem sets (working on multiplication by 2s and 3s only? No problem!) As they get through the levels, they receive different marbles to use in there future sets. Make sure you have a durable case, slippery fingers happen!!

I work summer school and I can't tell you how many kids, boys and girls, loved just the free version of My Playhome. It reminds me of colorforms where you get cling paperdolls to put in a visual scene. Just add cause and effect animation and sound effects! Occupational Therapists can work on finger isolation and dragging skills. Speech Language Pathologists can work on language skills like vocabulary and categories.

If you work with any student working on print handwriting, DOWNLOAD THIS NOW. It's one of my absolute favorite apps that I used constantly with my OT students and my own children. You have the options to work on pre-writing strokes, upper case letters, lower case letters, numbers and words. It comes with a couple of sample word lists but you can add your own word bank (I have used it for name writing, spelling lists, vocabulary, and sight words). What a lot of users don't know about is that this app takes data called tracing history, so you can see how your student is doing and customize their next handwriting session. The reports can be exported by email or printed. There are also tons of setting options such as selection of font (Handwriting without tears, Zaner Bloser, D'Neilian, UK and Scandinavia), left-handed mode, time limits, letter size and you can customize the difficulty levels, reward activities, prompts, models and hints given. If I needed to give it a rating on a 10 point scale, it goes to 11.

Okay, this isn't a favorite like my reviews above, but I thought it was interesting enough to download and play around with. This brainstorming app is honeycomb shaped brainstorming app that exports in several formats like photo, pdf, html, etc. You can connect it to iTunes, dropbox or email it in a zip archive file. If you buy the pro version ($5.99) you can actually screen cast it to other devices so it would be a great collaboration tool.

Paperport notes is brought to you by Nuance, which makes speech recognition software and app. It is similar to the Notes app that comes with the iPad, each document is listed on the left side bar. The added features include the ability to draw, highlight, audio recording and add images. In addition to images, you can import documents into it, including PDFs. Then drag a text box and annotate on the top (great for worksheets). It does some OCR (optical character recognition) where you take an image and it translates it to text. The OCR isn't the best, but I have had success with pictures with crisp text on it. The thing I like about Paperport is that Speech recognition is integrated in the keyboard. If you have an older iPad that doesnt have speech recognition, this is a way to give students easy access to it without having to open up a dedicated speech recognition app and copy and paste the text somewhere else. '
