Have a train lover on board in your classroom? This train themed app has your student at heart. Work on matching, patterns and sorting with shapes, colors, numbers and letters. Occupational Therapists can use this app for finger isolation and visual perceptual skills. Note some of the activities might be challenging for some preschoolers, so test it first to make sure its just the right fit.

Practice skip counting and math facts while blowing up aliens in spaceships in this cute math app. The reason I really like this app is it allows you to either tap on the space ships or use game buttons on the side of the screens, so you can use this app with a student who has limited mobility. The instructions are read in a robot voice, so you may need to work with your student in the app to make sure they get what to do.

One basic app I use with students with all kinds of needs is a drawing app. However many drawing apps are either too complex or too baby-ish for my older kids. This whiteboard app is simple and easy to use and there are no cutesy stickers or utensils that paint hearts and rainbows. Occupational therapists can use this app to bring in pictures of handwriting worksheets to trace or take a picture of a busy scene and work on a custom I spy/hidden pictures. Its also a good teacher tool for presenting to a class or a coach can use the basketball and soccer field backgrounds.

Finger Paints with Sounds is a fun cause and effect, music/sound effect based finger painting app that you can use with students with multiple disabilities, students who need a relaxing sensory break or an interesting way to practice handwriting. If you don't want the music or sound effects you can turn them off. My favorite is you can select multi-touch or single touch so you can move your whole hand over the screen. If you use multi-touch, make sure to u se guided access or turn off gestures if you want to use this feature or you will accidentally change apps or exit it.

This app is a counting storybook about a monster in a visual scene. The student taps on items in the monster's house starting with 1 and ending with 12 (count 5 books, pictures in frames on the wall, etc.). Some of the items will do animation and/or sound effects when you tap them. What I like about it is other items on the visual scene do animation, so it is a good app for Occupational Therapists to work on finger isolation, visual discrimination and figure ground.

It's hard to find free, errorless handwriting tracing apps that provide visual cues AND that can be used with older students. The cues are just arrows and the reward is simply stars (no cupcakes or trains). What I don't like about the app is that it is only errorless and there are not many options. Remember it's just a tracing app, so it doesn't provide instruction really, but a great way for students with emergent handwriting skills to practice.

This is a super easy to use to-do list that has a hero themed game icons (knight with a sword, treasure chests, etc). You can set a reminder for your task. This is a great alternative to homework planners for students who need something very simple or a fun alternative to the reminders app that comes on the iPad. When you complete a task you swipe the task from left to right and your hero will rush off and give you a gem for your treasure chest. The more tasks you complete, the higher level you become. The things I don't like about the app is that there is not a prioritization and is that the most frequent reminder is just once a day (so you can't use it for prompting like pay attention, take a sensory break, etc.).
