Appy Friday 1/30/15

Appy Friday! I am SO glad it's Friday! It's been a busy week. If you are supporting a iPad user who has some kind of high school European History class, this is the Friday for you!

Just wanted to mention something based on a few comments I have received from readers. If you have a child who has fine motor problems, remember just because an app works on both an academic skill and a fine motor skill, does not mean that you should work on those different skills at the same time. So if you are working on a fine motor skill and you find an app that is educational, make sure that the educational content is on something your child has already mastered so they don't get frustrated. Or vice versa if your child is working on an academic skill, don't pick something that is difficult for them fine motor wise. (It's okay to practice!)

This is a drawing app that first starts with tracing. It demos prewriting strokes, shapes and then you trace it. It shows you what you drew on a separate screen with a star rating from 1-5. Then you can pick a picture to trace which it takes you through step by step, fading its lines for tracing after a few seconds (but fades back in if you are not done). After you draw it, you can color it. I think some of the pictures are difficult, so test them first and guide your student in which ones are right for them. OTs will love this app for visual perceptual skills and visual memory.

This is a simple drawing app that puts out a line of streaming hearts. You can make some changes to it's appearance such as the heart color, effect, size, and beat. This could be a simple cause and effect activity for emergent touch screen users or you can use it for practicing tracing pre-writing strokes or letters (teacher/therapist would write and then the student would change heart color and trace). If your student isn't interested in hearts for Valentines day, the developer has a similar app called Draw with Stars.

You read the word on the screen into the microphone and it uses speech recognition to determine how you did. You receive immediate feedback and a score. If you did well, an animation happens (the otter catches a fish and puts it in its bucket). This app is intended for English Language learners, but it would be a great for Special Education teachers and Speech Language Pathologists to help kids to practice intelligibility and for single word reading skills. Some kids may be frustrated or sensitive about their scores. Either wait until they feel more confident or encourage the student to try again. You can try many times if you don't like your score.

So many of the interactive storybooks are geared for younger readers. This is one of the few geared for kids ages 12 and above. It's in a comic book format, so a lot of the text are in speech bubbles or part of the graphics. Working through the story requires the student to either swipe through pages or tap interactive elements on the screen. For OTs, you could work on figure ground, visual discrimination and practice touch screen gestures (tap and swipe).

Preschool & Kindergarten learning is one of those multi-purpose early childhood apps where you get a little bit of everything: vocabulary, puzzles, counting, matching, letters and numbers. It doesn't take data, so I would use it for independent practice. Occupational Therapists can use this app to work on visual closure, visual discrimination and finger isolation.

This is a fun way to apply geometry and for Occupational Therapists to work on pinching and visual discrimination and problem solving. You receive a 2 dimensional puzzle that you build into a 3D shape (like folding up a paper box). It takes a little practice to get used to the interface. You have to touch and drag to fold and pinch and move to spin the object.  You can always pause and go back to try again. It gives you 1-3 star ratings by the speed it takes you to complete the puzzle. Also available on Andriod (see bottom of this email for the google play link).

This is a Science manipulative app. It is a great way to practice different circuits (Series circuit, parallel circuit using batteries, wires, bulbs, switches and diodes). It won't be accessible to every student with a disability. You do need accurate finger isolation. However, Occupational Therapists and Special Education Teachers will like this app for some of their students with fine motor difficulties to participate in electricity science labs. It is a Chinese app so when you open it up in iTunes, don't freak out. Some of the information is in Chinese. Once I downloaded and opened it, the app itself was in English.

This is a simple interactive storybook about space where you can have the book read to you, read individually and auto play. The animation is cute and has sound effects on every page.

This is a virtual manipulative app that allows students to have access to tons of math manipulatives. It comes with a default set of arrays, fraction kit, hundreds chart, money, number houses, number line number tiles, ten frame and tether math. But if you select "all tools"  find more including some for algebra, times tables, graphs, clocks, comparison, etc. This app has one basic math operations activity (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) to have some independent practice.


Middle-High school

This is a mind-map graphic organizing app. It's simple and not much to it. The main limitation is you can only save it as a picture which can be shared to your photo roll or emailed as a photo attachment. I do prefer Inspiration Maps because it has more templates available, but it's lite version limits the number of documents you have. So Dream-X this is a good alternative, but only when you can download it for free!
